Chamber note · Criminal law

Before a criminal consultation

A note on preparation. It is not advice about bail, charge or sentence.

Not legal advice.

Reading this note does not create an advocate–client relationship with Syed Ammar Haider Tipu Shah Advocate High Court or with Nisar Haider Law Associates. If a person is in custody, or a hearing is hours away, telephone 0346-6805808. Do not wait for a form.

Criminal work is the principal’s personal practice, read alongside his MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice. People often arrive wanting a prediction. A website cannot give one, and the chamber will not dress a guess up as a percentage. Courts decide. The first job of a consultation is to see what stage the matter has reached and whether the principal can act.

Say where things stand

In the enquiry, name the stage in ordinary language: a complaint has been made, an investigation is under way, someone has been detained, a court is being asked to consider bail, a trial date exists, or a decision has already been given. You do not need the legal label. If you have a date, include the date. If you do not, say so.

Leave the papers until they are asked for

Statements, photographs, medical records and identity documents should not travel through the public form or through an unsolicited WhatsApp chat. Those channels are convenient for a sentence of introduction. They are a poor place for a file. When the chamber confirms that it can look at the matter, it will say how documents should be sent.

Mention any lawyer already involved

If another advocate is instructed, say so in the first message. The chamber will not quietly become a second set of counsel. A clean handover, if one is appropriate, is discussed openly.

What the degree does not do

Criminology training helps the principal read how an investigation is put together. It does not change the evidence, and it does not mean every criminal matter is accepted. Conflicts, the court, and the time available are real limits.

When you are ready, use the consultation request and choose criminal law. Keep the summary short.
